The GSPCA currently treat over 2,000 wild animals and birds each year, this number continues to increase and our existing facilities can’t cope with the increase in demand, and are not fit for purpose. They desperately need a radical reorganisation and updating. From seal pups to baby hedgehogs, kingfishers to buzzards, ducklings to loggerhead turtles, bats to voles the variety of wild animals and birds GSPCA help is vast. To help achieve the new Wildlife Hospital we are launching our Exclusive Build Partner scheme and a Buy a Brick Scheme for individuals and businesses looking to support this much needed build. The ‘Buy a Brick’ we have two options for you to choose: Option 1: £250 have your family name or company logo engraved on a brick which will feature in the build of the Wildlife Hospital. Option 2: £50 buy a brick for the build. Multiple brick packages are also available. For details of our individual, as a gift, corporate sponsorship packages or to make a larger donation please contact Steve Byrne by calling 01481 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “At the GSPCA 1920’s Ball last month we launched our ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign to help achieve our proposed new Wildlife Hospital.” “Sure have kindly lent us some phones and DLM Architects headsets so that when we are out and about we can show case the new build and what we hope it will look like.” “From Temperance the Grey Seal Pup we released this year to Blucher the Barn Owl from Herm we help so many wild animals and each brick can help make a huge difference to those animals coming through our care.” “The ‘Buy a Brick’ for the new Wildlife Hospital could make an ideal gift for a loved one or friend who has a passion for conservation and helping wildlife.” “With Christmas fast approaching we can do a lovely gift pack through the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign for our Wildlife Hospital.” The next events we will be attending with our Buy a Brick leaflets will be Discover Dogs at Beau Sejour on Sunday the 14th October and the Wellbeing Fayre at Beau Sejour on Monday 8th October. Here is the Discover Dogs facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/events/1925554847734478/ Leaflets and further information are available at the GSPCA. More on the Exclusive Build Partner Scheme - DLM and the GSPCA are delighted to showcase the proposed designs for the new GSPCA Wildlife Hospital and launch the Build Partner Scheme. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager continued "The GSPCA are hugely grateful to DLM Architects who have listened and understood our requirements and turned them into this wonderful design.” “We believe this much needed purpose-built Wildlife Hospital will enable us to meet the growing demands of wildlife on our island.” "With 1,500 to 2,000 wild animals and birds through the doors every year we see more wild animals come into our care than domestic species and we have been helping this number of animals for many years and it looks likely to continue and with the buildings we care for the wildlife dating back many decades a new facility fit for purpose and the future is essential and we are appealing for support." "From seal pups to baby hedgehogs, kingfishers to buzzards, ducklings to loggerhead turtles, bats to voles the variety of wild animals and birds we help is vast." "To help achieve the new Wildlife Hospital we launched our Exclusive Build Partner scheme for those businesses and individuals looking to support this much needed build." "We are asking for 350 Exclusive Build Partner to sign up for a minimum £520 a year for 5 years or a total of £2,600 per partnership and would love to hear from anyone that would like to get involved with this or any fund raising or donations towards our Wildlife Hospital new build." "If anyone would like to learn more or discuss how they can get involved and support our Wildlife Hospital new build please do get in touch by calling 01481 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg." David De La Mare Director DLM Architects said “As a chartered architecture practice we have a responsibility to design buildings that have a positive impact on our natural environment through sustainable intervention. This can range from thermal performance, energy consumption, building materials, planted walls and roofs, and aesthetic appearance to the specific use of the building” “The proposed wildlife centre will allow the GSPCA to work more efficiently and cope with the increasing demand on injured wildlife in a purpose built space giving the animal the best chance of recovery and integration back to the wild. “ “DLM Architects is a team of animal lovers and whilst we enjoy designing a building within a detailed criteria for the benefit of our local wildlife, it is also very rewarding to show our support for the great work done by all at the GSPCA.” “The design has evolved primarily from the requirements of the brief, isolating various species within suitable zones and necessary room size in relation to the duration of treatment required.” “Consideration has been made to minimise ongoing maintenance costs, centralise storage, administration and cooking facilities, and reduce the trauma of moving the wildlife to and from the relevant zones.” “The overall form has been developed to respond to the topography and orientation of the site, locating treatment rooms to the outskirts of the footprint where the wildlife will endure less disruption from the central circulation space.” “We have also considered how fundraising can be integrated into the design and construction of the building and these ideas will be launched a little further into the project.” DLM & The GSPCA are meeting to discuss the proposals with the Planning Department next week. We REALLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT PLEASE Donate to our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal Following the States of Guernsey announcement about the Coronavirus Pandemic many of our services, events, boarding, and income streams have stopped and we really need your help. Although we remain committed to looking after all of the animals in our care and rescuing those in need, the restrictions and safety procedures we have in place are causing many challenges. With running costs of £2,000 a day NEVER have we needed your support more than we do today. To donate please visit - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are all experiencing incredible challenges at present and we cannot thank everyone enough for how the island is coming together to get through the Coronavirus Pandemic.” “With all of the restrictions in place our major income from boarding, events and our charity shop has all but disappeared in the recent weeks and with running costs of £2000 a day to care for the 350+ animals at the GSPCA and run our animal ambulance 24/7 NEVER have we needed your support more.” “Today we have launched our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal and every penny donated will help make a real difference.” “As we have heard many times together we are stronger and with your support we can get through this.” “The team at the GSPCA work around the clock and last night we helped three orphaned baby rabbits Peter, Pierre and Pete and in the early hours our wardens were out rounding up stray horses which truly shows how we work around the clock to care for the animals of Guernsey.” “We have used the wonderful Giving.gg as our fund raising platform with a very ambitious target of £100,000 and if we raise this it would be truly incredible.” “We are reminding all to please stay at home and DO NOT come to the GSPCA but you call us on for any enquiries, help or even to donate over the phone, just call 257261.” “This is an incredibly difficult time for us and we appreciate your ongoing support during the Coronavirus crisis.” http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/we-really-need-your-support-please-donate-our-gspcacoronaviruscrisisappeal
Happy Easter from the GSPCA & an IMPORTANT Message With tens of thousands of us at home this Easter across the Bailiwick of Guernsey you could be putting your pet at risk at if you feed your pet chocolate intended for people or they manage to find those carefully hidden from the children, as many of us might be planning our home Easter Egg Hunt as with the Coronavirus restrictions hunts are cancelled across the islands. Across the Bailiwick we are all stocking up Easter eggs and chocolate as gifts for family and loved ones, but the GSPCA has an important message for pet owners. Chocolate is highly poisonous to many pets, with dogs being most commonly affected. and many pet owners are still not aware of the risk. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is similar to caffeine and highly toxic to dogs and other pets. High quality chocolate poses the biggest risk to pets and an average bar of dark chocolate (30-45g) contains enough theobromine to fatally poison a smaller dog. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said: "Due to the Coronavirus restrictions and with so many of us at home this Easter you might be planning an Easter Egg Hunt in your house or garden but please ensure if you are your pets are safe.” “Dogs as well as humans love the taste of chocolate and with their keen sense of smell they will sniff out hidden Easter eggs putting them at risk." "In households with pets, chocolate should be stored safely and securely and well out of the reach of paws and children’s hands as they may try and feed it to the pets in the household." "If you would like to get your pets an animal safe Easter treat please contact your pet retail store where they are likely to have a selection on sale and where you can also get appropriate advice." “It is fantastic news that the States of Guernsey has classed the Easter Bunny as an Essential Worker, as are we here also at the GSPCA working 24/7 caring for over 300 animals and although we are open only for essential activities such as the rescue and care of animals please do help donate to our #GuernseyCoronavirusCrisisAppeal to give the animals an Easter gift if you can via https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal or call us on 01481 257261.” Lorna Chadwick GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager said "Every year, vets in Guernsey see cases of chocolate poisoning in animals and sadly, for some, the poisoning can be fatal." “With so many at home this Easter with the States of Guernsey restrictions in place we have to all take extra care.” "It is important to feed all of our pets a healthy balanced diet and very important that pet owners are vigilant this weekend with the many chocolates that will be around households across the Bailiwick." "If you are wanting to treat your dog or pet this Easter then there are a wide variety of treats and specifically manufactured dog chocolates that you can buy from a range of retail outlets, but please ensure moderation as an overweight pet is an unhealthy pet." On average the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS), a national resource which provides information to vets about poisons and associated treatments, receive 150% more calls about chocolate poisoning in the month of Easter than in the following month. To see more information by the VPIS go to http://www.vpisuk.co.uk/portal/Home/tabid/85/Default.aspx How to spot chocolate poisoning – The effects of chocolate poisoning in dogs usually appear within 12 hours and can last up to three days. Initial signs can include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, a tender tummy and restlessness. These symptoms can then progress to hyperactivity, tremors, abnormal heart rate, hyperthermia and rapid breathing. In severe cases there are fits, heart beat irregularities, coma or even death. Any dogs showing these signs the GSPCA advises you get in touch with your vet immediately for advice. Another common food item in the house to avoid feeding dogs is onions, xylitol (a sweetener found in food), small bones (such as chicken and turkey), grapes and raisins as these too can be toxic or cause health risks to dogs. If you are a cat owner then please be aware that some cats cannot digest the sugar lactose which is found in cows milk and it is best to feed an alternative. Each year we hold a number of Dog and Cat First Aid Courses and although they are currently postponed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic please keep an eye here when the restrictions are lifed - http://www.gspca.org.gg/services/training-courses We will be posting a short video later today with Easter related advice. In line with States of Guernsey advice please DO NOT visit the GSPCA if you are over 65, have an underlying health condition or have any symptoms of Coronavirus and only visit us if your visit is essential but before doing so please call us on 01481 257261 or email admin@gspca.org.gg before your trip to the GSPCA to see if we can help without you coming to the Shelter. For the latest information and advice please visit http://www.gspca.org.gg/search/node/coronavirus With huge challenges on our resources and a drop in income from boarding and donations please help us help animals in Guernsey with our #GuernseyCoronavirusCrisisAppeal by donating online via - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/happy-easter-gspca-important-message-many-us-will-be-home-easter-we-need-keep-our-pets-safe

More about the West Show - The West show is arguably Guernsey’s premier agricultural and horticultural show. Held annually since 1913 the West show is a traditional country show with many modern aspects, and this year being the centenary it promises to be bigger and better than ever. The show this year has the main two days as usual on the Wednesday and Thursday with the usual tented competitions and animal competitions together with the arena entertainment and side displays. The horse competitions all take place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prior to the show, with the exception of the harness showing classes and the carriage driving and scurry classes which take place on the Thursday of the show. Held since 1985 on a site of approximately 35 acres at the former L’Eree aerodrome, the West show is the highlight of the summer for many from the western parishes who look forward to meeting up with friends they haven’t seen since the previous year and also of course people from all over the island and visitors alike. Crowds of 8,000 over the two main days are not unusual. To visit the West Show facebook page please click here https://www.facebook.com/WestShowGuernsey . Today is World Animal Day - Please help the 500+ animals at the GSPCA and here are a few ways you can World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4. It started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned on locations all over the globe. 4 October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. Numerous churches throughout the world observe the Sunday closest to 4 October with a Blessing for the Animals. However, World Animal Day has now gone beyond being the celebration of a Christian saint and is today observed by animal-lovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds. Animal blessings are held in churches, synagogues, and by independent Animal Chaplains in parks and fields. Animal rescue shelters hold fundraising events and open days, wildlife groups organize information displays, schools undertake animal-related project work and individuals and groups of friends or co-workers donate to animal charities or pledge to sponsor a shelter animal. At the GSPCA we help over 3000 wild animals and domestic through the doors every year and we currently have over 500 in our care. This Summer has been one of the busiest we have ever experienced in terms of numbers of animals from nearly 100 hedgehogs in our care to 50 rabbits, 30 reptiles to many parrots, dozens of cats to 20 ducks, hamsters to other animals in our care, many needing new and loving homes. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It is amazing the numbers of animals we help every day here at the GSPCA but we couldn’t do so much without the support of the public and local businesses.” “Today is World Animal Day and with over 500 animals in our care we are always appealing for support and help with the work we carry out 24/7 from donating towards the animals in our care, finding them new homes, helping volunteer with our work and I many other ways.” “If you would like to support our work then you can donate and find out more online, call us on 257261, pop into the Shelter in St Andrews, email admin@gspca.org.gg or by post GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, GY6 8UD.” "We have many wish list plans from a new dryer to our proposed new Wildlife Hospital all to help the many animals at the GSPCA and that pass through the doors 24/7." “We have so many rabbits and ducks in need of homes, as well as many lizards, turtles and many others which can be seen on our website or popping into the Shelter between 11am and 4pm 7 days a week.” "If you can't help adopt an animal maybe you could become an Angel pen Pal Sponsor or help towards one of our projects or wishes to help the 500+ animals in our care." "Without your support we could achieve so much and from all the animals in Guernsey and from the GSPCA we are so thankful for all the support we receive." "If you would like to help us in any way please do check out the links on our website, pop in or call us on 257261." Spooky Tours and Halloween Treasure Hunt Tours at the GSPCA October Half Term The week of Half Term the GSPCA are running Spooky Tours and Halloween Treasure Hunts at the GSPCA. Last year we had young vampires, cats, zombies and monsters for the scary events at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews. The groups on arrival will have lots of spooky things to do and see from Webster our tarantula to the many lizards in our care, black cats and many others some with scary names. Tours take about 45 minutes and once the treasure hunt quiz is complete all will get prizes for their great fancy dress and doing well in the quiz. The children will then hunt for spooky numbered cards in a very Halloween themed room. With ghouls and ghosts, smoke and bubbles, disco lights and spiders, wiggly worms and tunnels the children have to find hidden Halloween cards to win prizes. Last year all had a fantastic time and the parents and the children all left with a pumpkin bag full of gifts and saying - "This is fantastic, thank you so much." "I would have loved this when I was a child." "What a great afternoon, thank you." "They loved it, thank you." Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager and Grim Reaper Tour Guide said "We had a lovely spooky last Halloween and it was great to see the effort the children made with their fancy dress." "Once again this year we will decorate our events room with a Halloween theme and the children and the parents will be shown around the Shelter, playing a quiz and searching for the Halloween cards for prizes." "It is £20 per child or £17.50 with an Island Mums card and spaces are limited so please book early.” "All the funds raised will help the bats, cats, owls and many other animals at the GSPCA, as well as help towards our new Wildlife Hospital." "Please do call 257261 to book your childs place or via our paypal link and indicate your ideal day." Could you 'Trick or Pet Treat' this Halloween & collect for animals at the GSPCA & safety tips Every year many children with parents or guardians head out at Halloween on the 31st October dressed up to celebrate the American tradition of 'Trick or Treat'. With the growing concern of the consumption of sweets and sugar why not this Halloween raise funds for charity. With the dark evenings it is important to ensure you follow some simple safety hints and tips, but this year could your Halloween night out help benefit the hundreds of animals in need in Guernsey. At the GSPCA we currently have over 500 animals in our care and over 3000 are rescued, cared for and rehomed by the GSPCA every year. When out 'Trick or Treating' why not instead this year say 'Trick or Pet Treat' and maybe add 'to help animals at the GSPCA'. Whether donations of change, animal feed or even actual 'Pet Treats' every penny helps make a difference. If you have a bucket to take out why not click here to download a label to stick to it to help advertise your collection http://gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Trick%20or%20Pet%20treat.pdf. Not everyone celebrates the Halloween tradition and it is important to please keep this in mind and respect the wishes of those who decline, but for those that join in and support your collection please do celebrate and thank them for their generosity. If you haven't got children or would rather not have them go out could your work place, group or school hold a 'Trick or Pet Treat' mufti day or event to help raise funds for animals at the Shelter? Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treating Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult. If you have a group of kids going, the parents should choose two or three of them to go along and keep an eye on things. It is always best to keep to early evening to avoid upsetting homes where the residents may plan an early night due reasons such as their health or young children. Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves (any doubts please ensure an adult is present and accompanies them). Make sure that they have a mobile phone. Let your children know not to cut through back lanes and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track. Let them know to stay in well lighted areas with lots of people around. Explain to them why it can be dangerous for kids not to do this. If they are going out alone, they are old enough to know what can happen to them in a bad situation and how to stop it from happening. Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. This way you can check for any problem candy and get the pick of the best stuff! Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Explain why this is not a good idea and what to do if someone approaches them and tries to talk to them. Make sure your child carries a torch, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars. Let them know that they should stay together as a group if going out to Trick or Treat without an adult. Explain that not everyone celebrates Halloween and if they decline to donate or give then that is the persons choice and should be respected politely. Some home owners will have animals and pets themselves and to take care when approaching or leaving a property. It is extremely important that where gates are present they are closed after use. At the GSPCA we want all animals and people to have a fun and safe Halloween and for those looking to support us this Saturday thank you so much as we and the animals really appreciate it. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "This Halloween could you do something a little different to help animals in Guernsey?" "Instead of 'Trick or Treating' could you say 'Trick or Pet Treat' to help raise funds for animals in Guernsey." "Many of us as parents are concerned with the amount of sugar our children eat and many children love animals and helping them so why not combine the two this Halloween." "We want to ensure those going out are safe whether helping collect for the GSPCA or for themselves so we have popped a few safety tips online to keep in mind before heading out." "Thank you to all that choose to help us and the animals in our care this Halloween." If you would like a copy of the 'Trick or Pet Treat' poster please call 01481 257261, pop into the Shelter or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg Thank you for your support. Official Opening of the GSPCA Memorial Garden and Chapel of Rest Friday 15th February 230pm This Friday after many months of work, countless volunteers, supporters and businesses, amazing donations and support the GSPCA will officially open the new Chapel of Rest and revamped Memorial Garden. Every year the GSPCA helps over 1000 pet owners through the loss and death of their beloved pets and thanks to so many there is now a lovely area to help pet owners through this difficult time at the GSPCA. The new Chapel of Rest is an area where those that want to spend the last moments with their pet can do so and is a private area with an altar so that grieving owners can have some private moments at what is always a difficult time. The Memorial Garden is a wonderful area which so many have helped create. From the Work to Benefit team to the amazing Ann Wragg there have been a wide range of groups and helpers that have helped with the grounds work and incredible donations. One of the biggest supports has been Le Friquest Garden Centre who have helped with thousands of pounds worth of plants and other items to help develop what we have today. Staff from Le Friquet Garden Centre will be officially opening the Chapel of Rest and Memorial Garden which takes place on the last day of #GSPCAPurpleWeek celebrating 146 years since the GSPCA was founded. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are incredibly excited to be opening our Chapel of Rest and Memorial Garden this Friday at 2.30pm.” “The number of people, businesses and groups that have helped us create what we now have for bereaved pet owners is incredible and words really do not justify the thanks we wish to convey to all that have helped in anyway.” “We help over 1000 pet owners every year in Guernsey through the death of their pets as we provide a cremation service as well as helping over 200 road traffic accident animals every year and the team at the GSPCA strive to ensure we do our very best for each family through what is always a difficult time.” “Hopefully these areas will help those that come to us have a quiet space at the GSPCA and the Chapel is a lovely area where those wanting to spend the last moments with their beloved pet can do so and they are welcome to share that area with their family and friends before their pets are cremated or they take them home to be buried, as if having a ceremony if they wish to do so.” “We all know at the GSPCA how hard it is when a much loved pet is no longer with us and we really hope these areas will help those during these difficult times.” “Staff from Le Friquet Garden Centre will officially open the Chapel of Rest and Memorial Garden at 2.30pm on Friday and all are welcome which is a lovely way to celebrate the last day of #GSPCAPurpleWeek .” “We will have some refreshments for those attending and will share a number of words of thanks.” “There are areas at the GSPCA that you can view animals for a minimum donation of £2 but this area will not require a visitor ticket as we want to support bereaved pet owners during that difficult time.” “We are looking at heart shaped plaques for pet owners to remember their pets in the Memorial Garden and will have further details very soon.” To visit the Guernsey Bereavement Service website please go to http://www.guernseybereavementservice.com/ To see the GSPCA page on helping bereaved pet owners please click here http://www.gspca.org.gg/services/pet-bereavement-advice-page . #BringYourDogtoWorkDay Friday 21st June All around Guernsey each year businesses and offices have had their 4 legged friends come to work and this ear Bring Your Dog To Work Day takes places on Friday 21st June. Having a dog in the room can make human colleagues more cooperative, reduce stress, increase job satisfaction and productivity. When adopting a dog or any animal from the GSPCA we often ask how many hours potential owners may be at work. Perhaps the question should actually be - are you able to take your dog to work? Discussing the benefits of taking a dog to work might just result in a match with a dog we have in for homing. We rehome hundreds of pets every year, with an average 40 to 50 dogs in need of a forever home in Guernsey each year. To see some of the dogs looking for homes please click here http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals/dogs . Seb Goman GSPCA Animal care Assistant said “We meet so many dogs here at the GSPCA from the strays we reunite to their owners to the boarding dogs in our care, those looking for new homes to those that have been cruelly treated.” “On Friday 21st June we hope that lots of owners around Guernsey get involved with #BringYourDogtoWorkDay and why not help raise funds for those at the GSPCA at the same time.” Lorna Prince Animal Welfare Manager said "We rehome and help dozens of dogs every month through the Shelter and the dog training classes we run at the GSPCA, and it is really nice to hear of those owners that can take their dogs to work." "Annie my little dog often comes to work with me which she both enjoys and often earns her keep with helping with tasks around the Shelter such as school visits or seeing how dogs in for homes behave around other dogs, as does Mouse my other dog who was one of the Slovakian rescue dogs." Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “This is the fifth year the GSPCA have been getting involved with #BringYourDogtoWorkDay which is such a fantastic day celebrating dogs in Guernsey.” “We help rehome 40 to 50 dogs each year in Guernsey and help around 200 strays find their way home.” “We also help dogs in so many ways from training classes to our boarding and we have a few of the team that regularly bring their dogs to work so we will be involved once again with #BringYourDogtoWorkDay .” “It all takes place on Friday June 21st and why not in place of a mufti day celebrate #BringYourDogtoWorkDay and help raise funds for the GSPCA.” “To set up a fund raising page for the day why not visit https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) or for lots of fund raising ideas please visit http://www.gspca.org.gg/fundraising .” “Last year #BringYourDogtoWorkDay was supported by many from Island FM to KPMG and a huge thanks to all that have got involved in previous years and we look forward to lots of pictures and updates for those helping us celebrate this years event.” http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/bringyourdogtoworkday-friday-21st-june

The show this year has the main two days as usual on the Wednesday and Thursday with the usual tented competitions and animal competitions together with the arena entertainment and side displays. Crowds of 8,000 over the two main days are not unusual. To visit the West Show facebook page please click here https://www.facebook.com/WestShowGuernsey . Online event BakeWithLuce Monday 11am raising funds for the animals at the GSPCA One of our wonderful volunteers who helps each Monday and been very much missing walking the dogs and helping around the GSPCA has decided to help some much needed funds for the GSPCA. Check out this great online event this Monday - Lucy Radford tells us all about it “When I started bakewithluce it was never just about business. I simply wanted to try and live a more fulfilling and inspiring life. So where do you find that? in others of course... The team at the GSPCA are such an inspiration and for the past 6 months I've been volunteering. Every Monday 8am-10am I offer up my time and am usually found in the kennels. I take the woofers out for their morning stroll (and poop). It's a great start to my 'working' week and I'm missing it. However, it is not my time that is needed currently but money towards their running costs. This bakewithluce LIVE is a GSPCA special. We can still 'share the joy' and I'm hoping for just two pounds from anyone that joins. There are plenty of ways to donate more if you wish (found on the GSPCA website) but for this event please only two pounds. thank you xx” Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “With all our events postponed, boarding at an all time low and our charity shop closed raising funds for the animals in our care has NEVER been so important.” “We are missing all of our amazing volunteers and Lucy has been a real star over the last 6 months.” “To donate to Lucy’s Just Giving page please go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bakewithluce and to check out her facebook page where this event will take place on Monday at 11am please go to https://www.facebook.com/bakewithluce/ .” “There many great ways and ideas to raise funds for the animals in our care on our website www.gspca.org.gg and to donate to our newly launched #GSPCACoronavirusAppeal please go to https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal .” http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/online-event-bakewithluce-monday-11am-raising-funds-animals-gspca

Emma Topley GSPCA Staff Member said “This is a great way we can all support the Shelter while many have to stay safe at home.” “We’ve got many rainbows around the GSPCA sharing the #StaySafe message and we wanted to run an event that everyone can get involved with young and old and we really don’t mind how artistic they are, you just need to include the rainbow and at least one animal which could be your pets or anything really, it is just a bit of fun.” Beckie Bailey GSPCA Staff Member said “I’m really looking forward seeing all the entries with rainbows and animals.” “This is a great way to get all the family involved and you can enter as many entries as you like but it is £5 minimum entry donation and every penny will help the many animals in our care and our 24 hour work.” Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager “What a great competition Emma has created to raise funds and spread the #StaySafe #GuernseyTogether and #ShareTheRainbow message.” “We are really missing all the events we would be attending and organising which not only raise essential funds, but also show case and promote our work.” “Earlier this week we launched our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal and we have had an incredible response and can’t thank everyone enough that has donated so far, but with no events and only one boarding cat in our care we are doing all we can to raise the £2000 needed to run the Shelter each day.” “We battle on with our essential work rescuing animals, rehabilitating wildlife and so much more but without public support we cannot achieve so much.” “Having children at home myself and other family members indoors this is a great way to have a bit of show and also help raise funds for the animals in our care with some great prizes for the winner and runner up in each category.” "On a trip out with the children yesterday on our bikes for our exercise time we counted an amaing 187 rainbows and we are hoping our competition wil help add many more around the islands or from anywhere across the world." “If you aren’t feeling arty then you can still donate to our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal by calling 01481 257261 or online https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal .” “Good luck one and all and we can’t wait to see your entries.” In line with States of Guernsey advice please DO NOT visit the GSPCA if you are over 65, have an underlying health condition or have any symptoms of Coronavirus and only visit us if your visit is essential but before doing so please call us on 01481 257261 or email admin@gspca.org.gg before your trip to the GSPCA to see if we can help without you coming to the Shelter. Join or support the 2.6 Challenge in aid of the GSPCA - Save the UK's Charities Raise funds or dontae to the 2.6 Challenge for the GSPCA by signing up here - https://twopointsixchallenge.justgiving.com/get-involved?charityId=249593&iesrc=ctr Organisers of mass-participation events across the country have launched a new virtual fundraiser to support UK charities during the Covid-19 crisis. The 2.6 Challenge aims to raise £67m by the end of April and is using the strapline “save the UK's charities”. The central day of the campaign will be 26 April, when the London Marathon was scheduled to take place. Last year the marathon raised £66.4m for charity. This year’s event has been postponed to October due to Covid-19. As part of the Mass Participation Sports Organisers (MSO) group, London Marathon Events has announced a virtual fundraiser to support charities instead. The public is being asked to take part in a 2.6 Challenge by running, walking or doing any other physical activity as long as it complies with social distancing guidelines, while donating or fundraising for a charity of their choice. In order to reach the target, 2.6 million people would need to raise or donate £26 each, or 260,000 people would need to generate £260 each. Charities have been encouraged to get on board with the campaign and ask their supporters to take part. Organisers have provided a marketing toolkit to make it easier for them to promote the initiative to their supporters. Today the GSPCA has signed up and you can easily donate or join in by going to https://twopointsixchallenge.justgiving.com/get-involved?charityId=249593&iesrc=ctr Organisers said sports bodies and celebrities will also be supporting the campaign, including former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss. Funds will be raised through the Virgin Money Giving and Just Giving platforms, which are both partners in the event. People can choose between donating to a specific charity or donating to a central pot managed by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Funds from the central pot will be distributed to all participating charities, based on how much each has raised independently. ‘As inclusive as possible’ Organisers said the challenge is not just for runners or athletes, but can work for anyone. Nick Rusling, co-chair of MSO and chief executive of Human Race, said: “The 2.6 Challenge can be anything that works for you. You can run or walk 2.6 miles, 2.6km or for 26 minutes. You could do the same in your home or garden, go up and down the stairs 26 times, juggle for 2.6 minutes, do a 26 minute exercise class or get 26 people on a video call and do a 26 minute workout – anything you like. “We want people to get active, have fun and raise money to help Save the UK’s Charities by giving money or raising funds for the charity close to your heart.” Conservative figures from NCVO estimate that the sector will lose more than £4bn in 12 weeks due to the Covid-19 crisis. Organisers said that while they are conscious that the fundraiser will not “save” UK charities by itself, they are hoping it will strongly convey the message to the public that charities need support. Hugh Brasher, event director at London Marathon Events, said: “The work that you [charities] do is so important to society. We are well aware of the huge issues the sector is facing at the moment and we really want to try and help. “The London Marathon is the largest one-day annual fundraising event in the world, and normally on 26 April thousands of charities would be benefiting, over £66m would be raised and there would be so many positive stories. “We are trying to make it as inclusive as possible, for charities of whatever size. Everyone can get involved. “It really starts to build the conversation that Britain needs to understand the importance of the work that you do – that you do now, that you have done previously and that you will be doing in the future.” Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Today the GSPCA have signed up for the 2.6 Challenge and what a great way to help raise funds for good causes and support charities.” “We have had many amazing supporters run the London Marathon and other communal events to help raise funds for the GSPCA and this is a great way we can all get involved with something to save our charities.” “To support the GSPCA by donating or making your own fund raising page please visit https://twopointsixchallenge.justgiving.com/get-involved?charityId=249593&iesrc=ctr .” “We launched our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal as without boarding, charity shops and events it has become a real struggle to raise the £2000 a day to carry out our 24/7 work helping animals and our community.” “We cannot thank those enough that have already helped or donated to the GSPCA it is hugely appreciated.” The campaign is supported by the Charities Aid Foundation, the Institute of Fundraising, the Small Charities Coalition, the Office for Civil Society, Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales, Let’s Do This, Virgin Money Giving and JustGiving.
