GSPCA Launch Buy a Brick for the Proposed New Wildlife Hospital If you have visited one of the GSPCA recent events or stalls you may well have learned of the newly launched ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign to help the GSPCA achieve the propose new Wildlife Hospital. The GSPCA currently treat over 2,000 wild animals and birds each year, this number continues to increase and our existing facilities can’t cope with the increase in demand, and are not fit for purpose. They desperately need a radical reorganisation and updating. From seal pups to baby hedgehogs, kingfishers to buzzards, ducklings to loggerhead turtles, bats to voles the variety of wild animals and birds GSPCA help is vast. To help achieve the new Wildlife Hospital we are launching our Exclusive Build Partner scheme and a Buy a Brick Scheme for individuals and businesses looking to support this much needed build. The ‘Buy a Brick’ we have two options for you to choose: Option 1: £250 have your family name or company logo engraved on a brick which will feature in the build of the Wildlife Hospital. Option 2: £50 buy a brick for the build. Multiple brick packages are also available. For details of our individual, as a gift, corporate sponsorship packages or to make a larger donation please contact Steve Byrne by calling 01481 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “At the GSPCA 1920’s Ball last month we launched our ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign to help achieve our proposed new Wildlife Hospital.” “Sure have kindly lent us some phones and DLM Architects headsets so that when we are out and about we can show case the new build and what we hope it will look like.” “From Temperance the Grey Seal Pup we released this year to Blucher the Barn Owl from Herm we help so many wild animals and each brick can help make a huge difference to those animals coming through our care.” “The ‘Buy a Brick’ for the new Wildlife Hospital could make an ideal gift for a loved one or friend who has a passion for conservation and helping wildlife.” “With Christmas fast approaching we can do a lovely gift pack through the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign for our Wildlife Hospital.” The next events we will be attending with our Buy a Brick leaflets will be Discover Dogs at Beau Sejour on Sunday the 14th October and the Wellbeing Fayre at Beau Sejour on Monday 8th October. Here is the Discover Dogs facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/events/1925554847734478/ Leaflets and further information are available at the GSPCA. More on the Exclusive Build Partner Scheme - DLM and the GSPCA are delighted to showcase the proposed designs for the new GSPCA Wildlife Hospital and launch the Build Partner Scheme. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager continued "The GSPCA are hugely grateful to DLM Architects who have listened and understood our requirements and turned them into this wonderful design.” “We believe this much needed purpose-built Wildlife Hospital will enable us to meet the growing demands of wildlife on our island.” "With 1,500 to 2,000 wild animals and birds through the doors every year we see more wild animals come into our care than domestic species and we have been helping this number of animals for many years and it looks likely to continue and with the buildings we care for the wildlife dating back many decades a new facility fit for purpose and the future is essential and we are appealing for support." "From seal pups to baby hedgehogs, kingfishers to buzzards, ducklings to loggerhead turtles, bats to voles the variety of wild animals and birds we help is vast." "To help achieve the new Wildlife Hospital we launched our Exclusive Build Partner scheme for those businesses and individuals looking to support this much needed build." "We are asking for 350 Exclusive Build Partner to sign up for a minimum £520 a year for 5 years or a total of £2,600 per partnership and would love to hear from anyone that would like to get involved with this or any fund raising or donations towards our Wildlife Hospital new build." "If anyone would like to learn more or discuss how they can get involved and support our Wildlife Hospital new build please do get in touch by calling 01481 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg." David De La Mare Director DLM Architects said “As a chartered architecture practice we have a responsibility to design buildings that have a positive impact on our natural environment through sustainable intervention. This can range from thermal performance, energy consumption, building materials, planted walls and roofs, and aesthetic appearance to the specific use of the building” “The proposed wildlife centre will allow the GSPCA to work more efficiently and cope with the increasing demand on injured wildlife in a purpose built space giving the animal the best chance of recovery and integration back to the wild. “ “DLM Architects is a team of animal lovers and whilst we enjoy designing a building within a detailed criteria for the benefit of our local wildlife, it is also very rewarding to show our support for the great work done by all at the GSPCA.” “The design has evolved primarily from the requirements of the brief, isolating various species within suitable zones and necessary room size in relation to the duration of treatment required.” “Consideration has been made to minimise ongoing maintenance costs, centralise storage, administration and cooking facilities, and reduce the trauma of moving the wildlife to and from the relevant zones.” “The overall form has been developed to respond to the topography and orientation of the site, locating treatment rooms to the outskirts of the footprint where the wildlife will endure less disruption from the central circulation space.” “We have also considered how fundraising can be integrated into the design and construction of the building and these ideas will be launched a little further into the project.” DLM & The GSPCA are meeting to discuss the proposals with the Planning Department next week. We REALLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT PLEASE Donate to our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal Following the States of Guernsey announcement about the Coronavirus Pandemic many of our services, events, boarding, and income streams have stopped and we really need your help. Although we remain committed to looking after all of the animals in our care and rescuing those in need, the restrictions and safety procedures we have in place are causing many challenges. With running costs of £2,000 a day NEVER have we needed your support more than we do today. To donate please visit - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are all experiencing incredible challenges at present and we cannot thank everyone enough for how the island is coming together to get through the Coronavirus Pandemic.” “With all of the restrictions in place our major income from boarding, events and our charity shop has all but disappeared in the recent weeks and with running costs of £2000 a day to care for the 350+ animals at the GSPCA and run our animal ambulance 24/7 NEVER have we needed your support more.” “Today we have launched our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal and every penny donated will help make a real difference.” “As we have heard many times together we are stronger and with your support we can get through this.” “The team at the GSPCA work around the clock and last night we helped three orphaned baby rabbits Peter, Pierre and Pete and in the early hours our wardens were out rounding up stray horses which truly shows how we work around the clock to care for the animals of Guernsey.” “We have used the wonderful Giving.gg as our fund raising platform with a very ambitious target of £100,000 and if we raise this it would be truly incredible.” “We are reminding all to please stay at home and DO NOT come to the GSPCA but you call us on for any enquiries, help or even to donate over the phone, just call 257261.” “This is an incredibly difficult time for us and we appreciate your ongoing support during the Coronavirus crisis.” http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/we-really-need-your-support-please-donate-our-gspcacoronaviruscrisisappeal
Happy Easter from the GSPCA & an IMPORTANT Message With tens of thousands of us at home this Easter across the Bailiwick of Guernsey you could be putting your pet at risk at if you feed your pet chocolate intended for people or they manage to find those carefully hidden from the children, as many of us might be planning our home Easter Egg Hunt as with the Coronavirus restrictions hunts are cancelled across the islands. Across the Bailiwick we are all stocking up Easter eggs and chocolate as gifts for family and loved ones, but the GSPCA has an important message for pet owners. Chocolate is highly poisonous to many pets, with dogs being most commonly affected. and many pet owners are still not aware of the risk. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is similar to caffeine and highly toxic to dogs and other pets. High quality chocolate poses the biggest risk to pets and an average bar of dark chocolate (30-45g) contains enough theobromine to fatally poison a smaller dog. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said: "Due to the Coronavirus restrictions and with so many of us at home this Easter you might be planning an Easter Egg Hunt in your house or garden but please ensure if you are your pets are safe.” “Dogs as well as humans love the taste of chocolate and with their keen sense of smell they will sniff out hidden Easter eggs putting them at risk." "In households with pets, chocolate should be stored safely and securely and well out of the reach of paws and children’s hands as they may try and feed it to the pets in the household." "If you would like to get your pets an animal safe Easter treat please contact your pet retail store where they are likely to have a selection on sale and where you can also get appropriate advice." “It is fantastic news that the States of Guernsey has classed the Easter Bunny as an Essential Worker, as are we here also at the GSPCA working 24/7 caring for over 300 animals and although we are open only for essential activities such as the rescue and care of animals please do help donate to our #GuernseyCoronavirusCrisisAppeal to give the animals an Easter gift if you can via https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal or call us on 01481 257261.” Lorna Chadwick GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager said "Every year, vets in Guernsey see cases of chocolate poisoning in animals and sadly, for some, the poisoning can be fatal." “With so many at home this Easter with the States of Guernsey restrictions in place we have to all take extra care.” "It is important to feed all of our pets a healthy balanced diet and very important that pet owners are vigilant this weekend with the many chocolates that will be around households across the Bailiwick." "If you are wanting to treat your dog or pet this Easter then there are a wide variety of treats and specifically manufactured dog chocolates that you can buy from a range of retail outlets, but please ensure moderation as an overweight pet is an unhealthy pet." On average the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS), a national resource which provides information to vets about poisons and associated treatments, receive 150% more calls about chocolate poisoning in the month of Easter than in the following month. To see more information by the VPIS go to http://www.vpisuk.co.uk/portal/Home/tabid/85/Default.aspx How to spot chocolate poisoning – The effects of chocolate poisoning in dogs usually appear within 12 hours and can last up to three days. Initial signs can include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, a tender tummy and restlessness. These symptoms can then progress to hyperactivity, tremors, abnormal heart rate, hyperthermia and rapid breathing. In severe cases there are fits, heart beat irregularities, coma or even death. Any dogs showing these signs the GSPCA advises you get in touch with your vet immediately for advice. Another common food item in the house to avoid feeding dogs is onions, xylitol (a sweetener found in food), small bones (such as chicken and turkey), grapes and raisins as these too can be toxic or cause health risks to dogs. If you are a cat owner then please be aware that some cats cannot digest the sugar lactose which is found in cows milk and it is best to feed an alternative. Each year we hold a number of Dog and Cat First Aid Courses and although they are currently postponed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic please keep an eye here when the restrictions are lifed - http://www.gspca.org.gg/services/training-courses We will be posting a short video later today with Easter related advice. In line with States of Guernsey advice please DO NOT visit the GSPCA if you are over 65, have an underlying health condition or have any symptoms of Coronavirus and only visit us if your visit is essential but before doing so please call us on 01481 257261 or email admin@gspca.org.gg before your trip to the GSPCA to see if we can help without you coming to the Shelter. For the latest information and advice please visit http://www.gspca.org.gg/search/node/coronavirus With huge challenges on our resources and a drop in income from boarding and donations please help us help animals in Guernsey with our #GuernseyCoronavirusCrisisAppeal by donating online via - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/happy-easter-gspca-important-message-many-us-will-be-home-easter-we-need-keep-our-pets-safe

EXCITING NEWS GSPCA Relaunch the Wildlife Hospital Appeal can you help the future of the Bailiwicks wildlife In February 2019 the States of Guernsey Planning Department gave the approval for the plans for the proposed new Wildlife Hospital at the GSPCA, but sadly due to covid and the global pandemic the project was put on hold. Nearly 3 years later the GSPCA are once again looking to the future for this much needed facility which is planned to replace a number of old buildings some which date back to the 1940’s. In 2018 the GSPCA launched a fundraising campaign for the facility and we are hugely grateful to all that have already supported this much needed facility but with rising costs we need your support more than aver to build a hospital to help the wildlife into the future. With just nearly £150,000 pledged or raised currently there is still a long way to go as the estimated costs for the facility are approximately £2,00,000 required to build the GSPCA Wildlife Hospital and to remove the old buildings. There are a number of ways you can help donate to this much needed project – To make a direct donation please visit - https://giving.gg/donate/event/4618/Please-Support-the-GSPCA-Wildlife-Hospital-Appeal To Buy a Brick in the new Wildlife Hospital and download a leaflet please click here - http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Buy%20a%20Brick%20Wildlife%20Hospital.pdf Larger donors or corporates may want to make a larger donation and become an Exclusive Build Partner and to find out more please visit - http://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-exclusive-build-partner We have yet to go to tender for the build which is the next step to get exact costs but for those wanting to help in much larger ways here are the estimated costs for some of the facilities that make up the £2,000,000 – Demolitions £70,000 Sub-structure £80,000 Drainage £99,000 Slab £160,000 Roof £263,000 External Walls £180,000 Glazing to whole build £70,000 Each rehabilitation room £40,000 Central feed kitchen £35,000 Each marine rehabilitation room and access to pool £30,000 Rehabilitation Pool – to be confirmed Rehabilitation aviaries/pens - £15-20,000 each Receiving office where the public can drop animals off and they can be admitted and entered into the system - £25-30,000 With 6 seals currently at the GSPCA and over 100 hedgehogs, not to mention many other injured birds and wild rabbits you would think the GSPCA is extremely busy and you would be correct. Saying this Spring is fast approaching and that means the numbers of animals to come into the care of the Shelter is increasing daily. The new Wildlife Hospital would help house the 2000+ wildlife that come through the GSPCA doors each year and with our environment a major concern a facility that would help benefit future generations. That means that is you looked at the cost per animal in the first year alone the build in the first year is £450 per wild animal and over a 10 year period £45 per animal. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It seems a long time since we got planning for a new Wildlife Hospital at the GSPCA and we are once again looking to the future.” “A new Wildlife Hospital is well over due not only for us here at the GSPCA but for the whole of the Channel Islands.” “We currently have 6 seal pups which is more than we have ever cared for to get back to the wild and with 2 from Jersey and 4 from Guernsey our facilities are used to help wildlife not just in Guernsey.” “We often have wildlife from Alderney, Sark, Herm and even Jethou at the GSPCA.” “We help over 2000 wild animals and birds every year and you’d be surprised what we get called out for.” “In recent years we have helped Olivia the loggerhead turtle, Fortune the dolphin, many oiled birds this winter, over 700 hedgehogs a year and even an eel in the middle of the road on a rainy day.” “We have raised and had pledged just nearly £150,000 towards the proposed Wildlife Hospital, so we have a long way to go to the £2,000,000 and every penny helps and is very much appreciated.” “We have had to re-look at the plans as build costs have gone up in many ways.” “For the last 2 years it has really been a battle to ensure we get through not just with funding but with all the struggles the pandemic has brought.” “Next month we celebrate 149 years helping the animals oof Guernsey and wouldn’t it be fantastic next year for our 150th celebrations to open a new Wildlife Hospital.” "We are really hoping to start work on the much needed facility this year and cannot acheive this without the amazing support of our fabulous community." Yvonne Chauvel GSPCA Senior Animal Care Assistant said “We are coming up to Spring at the GSPCA and it is always the busiest time of the year for wildlife.” “It is such wonderful news that we are relaunching the Wildlife Hospital Appeal and we now need the support and donations to build this new, much needed facility.” “Some months we have well over 200 wild animals and birds arrive sick and injured at the GSPCA and currently have 6 seals and over 100 hedgehogs.” “I have worked and helped at the GSPCA for over 25 years and although we have made improvements for the wildlife in our care we have needed new wildlife facilities for some time.” Geoff George Animal Collection Officer and Head of Marine Mammals said “With 6 grey seal pups we are able to provide what they need but the new Wildlife Hospital would give much better facilities and if we were needed to help more than six seals then we build would be able to do so.” “Day and night we are called out to help wildlife and we often help the other islands also.” “I’m called out to help rescue more wildlife than domestic animals and it would be fantastic to have a new building for them as many of the wildlife areas are in need of replacing and rebuilding.” Steve continued “There are many ways to help us towards to the proposed Wildlife Hospital from a donation to Buying a Brick, becoming a Build Sponsor to paying for an actual room or area of the building and to find out more please check out our website, call 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg .” "We have all seen Blue Planet 2 and what we are doing to our environment and this build would help the 1000's of animals of Guernsey that are found sick or injured each year back to the wild." More about the West Show - The West show is arguably Guernsey’s premier agricultural and horticultural show. Held annually since 1913 the West show is a traditional country show with many modern aspects, and this year being the centenary it promises to be bigger and better than ever. The show this year has the main two days as usual on the Wednesday and Thursday with the usual tented competitions and animal competitions together with the arena entertainment and side displays. The horse competitions all take place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prior to the show, with the exception of the harness showing classes and the carriage driving and scurry classes which take place on the Thursday of the show. Held since 1985 on a site of approximately 35 acres at the former L’Eree aerodrome, the West show is the highlight of the summer for many from the western parishes who look forward to meeting up with friends they haven’t seen since the previous year and also of course people from all over the island and visitors alike. Crowds of 8,000 over the two main days are not unusual. To visit the West Show facebook page please click here https://www.facebook.com/WestShowGuernsey .
