Description Aims and Objectives
A society formed in 1873 to prevent cruelty to animals, to rescue animals in distress, to provide shelter for stray, unwanted and sick animals, to encourage and foster by means of propaganda and education, kindness and consideration in the treatment of domestic and wild animals. In pursuance of these aims the society shall employ all moral and legal means to denounce acts of cruelty and neglect.
Organisation and Management
Overall management is by a President, Treasurer, and General Committee. The Shelter Manager is responsible for staffing and day-to-day running of the Shelter and we help over 3000 animals every year. The G.S.P.C.A. is fully autonomous.
The cost of running the Animal Shelter, ambulance and 24/7 service is around £650,000 per annum (excluding sums required for major renewals of vehicles or buildings). Funds are raised from membership subscriptions, donations, legacies, monthly giving schemes, collecting boxes, fund-raising events, flag days, commercial boarding of cats and dogs, and cremation service for pets. The society receives no grant from the States or any other source. Membership is open to all and is only £10 a year and there are options to give regularly to support our work and the animals in our care and become a member.
We often care for around 300 animals from wildlife to domestic.
There are many ways to support our work and anyone interested please do get in touch.
