Guernsey Society for the Physically DisabledMember Number: 022Description Aims and Objectives The society is a local charitable organisation, which operates from the Ron Short Centre at Beau Sejour. It is committed to help physically handicapped people of all ages in the Island, in a variety of ways, including direct, social, financial, and welfare assistance. It also runs a sheltered workshop at the Ron Short Centre on five days a week, producing a range of goods for sale to the public. The ladies enjoy a handicrafts afternoon each week, the men have two social afternoons. The society is keen to encourage its younger members educationally and socially, and has a thriving Youth and Social club and a very active swimming club open to members and non-members equally. Competent staff and/or helpers ably supervise all activities.
Organisation and Management By an Executive Committee of twelve members with a salaried Centre Manager and a female assistant, assisted by two part-time paid staff.
Finance The running expenses are largely met by donations, legacies, and many varied fund-raising activities. A contribution from the Board of Health is designed to assist with the administration of running the Sheltered Workshop and Centre, to include salaries, vehicle running costs, etc. Whilst the main requirement is financial, there is the occasional need to supplement the Society’s team of volunteer helpers (i.e. with drivers, swimming-club helpers, fund-raisers, etc.).
