Charities encouraged to apply for lottery funding
(30 November 2008)

With only two weeks until this year’s Christmas Lottery, The Association of Guernsey Charities is hoping that everyone will continue to support the draw, as all of the proceeds from tickets sold in the island will be given to local charities.

Last years draw was the most successful to date with the first prize reaching an amazing £505,000 and raising over £145,000 for Guernsey charities – the highest amount since the lottery began. This was distributed amongst 25 charities including several of the large organisations, as well as many of the smaller charities, which provide facilities and services that benefit the island.

Local charities are also reminded that they should now start planning their applications for a share of the money raised from this years draw.

Charitable organisations, which must be a member of the Association of Guernsey Charities in order to receive money from the lottery, can apply for a grant towards any project that they are undertaking in Guernsey during 2009. Any charity wishing to apply for a share of the funds will need to complete a Grant Application Form and return this to the Association with any supporting documents, including a full set of accounts.

Since the Channel Island Lottery started giving the proceeds of the Christmas draw to charity in 1986, over £1.8 million has been given to local good causes. Ticket sales dropped in the mid 1990’s, but over the past six years, there has been a major increase in the quantity of tickets sold, and therefore the amount of money given to the charities.

Any organisation wishing to apply for a lottery grant has until the end of January to submit an application. Click here to download a copy of the application form.

This years Christmas Lottery draw will be on Tuesday 16 December.
