Description Aims and Objectives

The Guernsey appeal was launched in February 2011 with an initial target to raise £ 100,000 to help with development of a new Teenage Cancer Trust unit for patients aged between 13 and 24 at Southampton General Hospital.   Thanks to the generosity and support of businesses and people in Guernsey we surpassed this target and the ward opened in 2013.  We need to continue our fundraising, as money is still needed to maintain the ward, to help local patients financially, for research, to deliver education and awareness programs in local secondary schools and to fund the specialist staff and resources needed to help this age group whilst going through the trauma of having cancer and the side effects of the treatment. Most young people in the Bailiwick will have to spend time in Southampton General Hospital for their treatment – particularly on first diagnosis – so the new ward ensures they can be in appropriate surroundings with age appropriate pastoral care and support.
